DRIVEWAYS, PATHS & PATIOS · HERNE BAY
Landscape Gardener of Kent installs block paving in Herne Bay for driveways, garden paths and patios. We plan the paving around its use, with suitable ground preparation, supporting layers, edge restraints and drainage.
Choose a pattern and border that connect your entrance and garden, or discuss replacing an uneven paved area. Send photographs and approximate dimensions for a free, no-obligation quote.
Set out parking, turning movements and room to open car doors. Include gate openings, bins and the route to the house. The paving specification needs to suit the vehicles using it.
Connect doors and garden features with a useful walking width. Consider corners, level changes and the junction with existing surfaces before choosing the pattern.
Allow space for furniture and walking around it. Blocks offer border and pattern choices; compare them with porcelain and natural stone on our Herne Bay patio page.
If the front drive and garden path will share a finish, they can be planned together while allowing the construction to reflect their different uses.
Look at block samples beside your house, walls and retained paving. A contrasting border can define a path or parking area, while a consistent colour palette can connect several spaces. If you are extending older paving, allow for differences between new blocks and weathered ones.
Discuss the laying pattern alongside the block range and intended loading. Herringbone, stretcher bond and other arrangements create different effects, but the setting out also needs to accommodate corners, covers and narrow strips.
Agree the edges and transitions before installation. A decorative border is part of the visible layout; the edge restraint also has a practical role in keeping the paving contained.
Good-looking blocks cannot compensate for unsuitable ground or inadequate support. We assess the existing surface, levels and signs of settlement before deciding what needs removal and what construction is appropriate.
A garden path and a vehicle driveway need different consideration. Ask for the proposed construction in the quote rather than assuming one excavation depth or base detail suits every job.
Standard block paving needs a suitable route for surface water. Permeable paving uses a coordinated system of blocks, joints and supporting aggregates that allows water to pass into the construction beneath. Permeable blocks alone do not establish that the whole installation will manage rainfall properly.
Ground conditions and levels influence the drainage design. Agree where water will go, including at the pavement crossing and where paving meets the house. For front-garden paving rules and access changes, see our Herne Bay driveway guide.
Check Planning Portal’s front-garden paving guidance and any property-specific restrictions before starting work.
The installed price depends on the area, chosen blocks, clearance, access, supporting construction and drainage. Borders, complex cutting and cover adjustments also affect the work. Retail block prices and labour-only rates do not describe a complete installation.
Compare written quotes for the same scope: removal and disposal, excavation, supporting layers, bedding, blocks, restraints, jointing, drainage and finishing. Confirm VAT treatment, any provisional work and how unexpected ground conditions will be handled.
A new driveway, a garden patio and lifting and relaying existing blocks involve different work. Share your intended use and photographs so we can quote for the installation you actually need.
Individual blocks may be lifted for access or a local repair. If an area has sunk or spread, the cause needs investigation before it is relaid. Reusing sound blocks can be possible, but allow for damaged units and colour differences in replacements.
Keep leaves and debris clear, maintain the specified joints and check drainage routes. Cleaning should follow the product guidance; aggressive washing can disturb joint material. Conventional and permeable systems may need different jointing and care.
Block paving is not permanently weed-free. Seeds and debris can collect in the joints, so routine attention remains part of ownership. Report movement or loose edges early rather than letting the affected area grow.
There is no single rate for every property. Size, material, clearance, ground preparation, access and detailing affect the installed price. Compare a measured, complete quotation rather than a material-only or labour-only figure.
A suitable geotextile may be specified to separate or filter layers, depending on the ground and construction. Its type and position need to suit the system. A generic weed membrane is not a replacement for a properly designed base or a universal requirement immediately below the blocks.
Neither is always cheaper. Compare suitable products and complete installation quotes for the same area and use. A garden slab specification should not be assumed suitable for vehicle parking.
Consider joint maintenance, cleaning, weed growth and the difficulty of matching older blocks. Inadequate support or restraints can lead to settlement or spreading. The groundwork and care requirements matter alongside the appearance.
Sound blocks may be reusable after inspection. The quote should allow for damage, cleaning and any replacement units. Where paving has settled, relaying needs to address the underlying cause.
The layout should retain access and account for cover heights and the surrounding cuts. Include covers in your photographs so their position and finishing can be considered during setting out.
Area, excavation, access, drainage and cutting affect the programme. Agree an expected schedule after assessment, including pedestrian access and when vehicles can return. A small repair and a complete driveway should not share a fixed timescale.
