Choose a loose-stone entrance with suitable supporting layers, contained edges and a maintenance routine you understand. Our Dover gravel driveway enquiries cover aggregate selection, slope, walking routes and whether the work is a full installation or replenishment.
Loose gravel shifts under tyres and feet. Frequent turning, braking and a slope can increase movement, while wheelchairs, pushchairs or mobility aids may benefit from a separate firmer route to the door.
Assess the actual gradient and use before choosing the finish. A stabilisation grid may help within a suitable design, but it does not make every steep driveway appropriate for loose stone.
Size is only part of the decision: shape, durability and suitability for vehicle use also matter. Smaller stones can migrate or be carried by tyres; larger stones change the feel underfoot. Ask for a driveway-suitable sample rather than choosing purely by colour.
Nominal 20mm angular stone is often considered, but confirm the aggregate against the layout and any grid system. Check its appearance wet and dry beside the house.
Decorative stone alone over soil is not a load-bearing driveway. Unsuitable material needs removing and supporting layers need specifying for the ground and parking use. The decorative depth should suit the selected aggregate rather than form a deep unstable loose layer.
Any fabric should have a defined separation role in the build. It does not prevent seeds germinating in debris above it. Include edging and transitions to paths in the construction.
Edges help keep stone where it belongs, especially at the pavement or adjoining lawn. Turning areas may need particular attention. Agree how displaced gravel will be kept away from the public route outside the site.
Water filtering through stone still depends on the ground and supporting layers. Wet spots, a low entrance or runoff from another surface need assessment before relying on the gravel’s apparent permeability.
Gravel can be economical on a suitable site, but excavation, support and borders still contribute to the total. Block paving has different material, laying and joint requirements. Compare full builds, with maintenance considered alongside the first cost.
A delivered tonne price is a supply figure. Coverage depends on aggregate data and specified depth. A top-up on a sound existing driveway is a different scope from constructing a new parking area.
Redistribute displaced stone, remove accumulated debris and manage weeds using suitable methods. Over time, topping up may be needed where material has moved or been lost.
Repeated hollows and soft patches deserve investigation of the support rather than endless replenishment. Send photographs and describe whether you need installation, repair or a top-up. Include the area, access and slope for a useful quotation.
Discuss driveway installers in Dover, resin driveways in Dover, tarmac driveways in Dover. Agree levels, access and the order of work together where the project includes several improvements.
Planning Portal: paving your front garden explains the English planning requirements. Check the proposal and any property restrictions before work.
Movement, ongoing raking, weeds and replenishment are common considerations. Slopes and wheeled access need assessment.
Suitable supporting layers, any specified separation fabric and edge restraint. Decorative gravel on soil is not adequate driveway construction.
It may be on a suitable site. Compare the complete preparation and installation, then consider maintenance.
Compare vehicle suitability, shape, movement and walking comfort. Nominal 20mm angular aggregate is often considered but is not a universal choice.
Assess the gradient and containment. A grid or another surface may be more appropriate.
Use the supplier’s data for the actual aggregate and installed depth rather than a fixed area for every product.
Where the support and drainage are sound. Persistent hollows or wet spots need assessment first.
No. The supporting layers, ground conditions and water route also determine drainage.
OUR WORK · KENT
Calculate the decorative quantity from the measured area and the agreed depth for the selected stone or grid. Convert volume to weight using supplier data for that material. Check the stated weight of bags and whether delivery is included; a bulk bag is not automatically one tonne.
The supporting aggregate and decorative stone perform different roles and need separate quantities in the proposal. Record the stone name and grading for future top-ups. Where an existing drive is being refreshed, clarify whether old stone is redistributed, supplemented or removed, and which base or edge repairs are included.
Use the same agreed scope when comparing proposals. Confirm the materials and work below the visible finish, together with any retained construction. Ask how exclusions or provisional work will be handled and keep the written specification with the quotation.
Photographs, dimensions and access details help define the work. They can start the discussion, with a visit or further assessment where needed. A quoted total is useful when it is clear what the finished result includes.
Agree the programme after the scope and materials are confirmed. Include delivery arrangements, protection of retained features and any periods when the area cannot be used. At handover, confirm how the completed work should be used and cared for, and retain the relevant product details.
